Part 3 – Reading for Information

The types of questions we must be aware to answer in this part.

General Meaning – Identify the topic, theme and ideas.

Specific information – Identify key information, supporting details, opinions, or examples

Inferences - draw conclusions and make assumptions based on information in the text

  • In this part you will get one set of questions
  • Statements (not sentence completion)
  • Choose in which paragraph in the text (A, B, C & D) each piece of information appears in
  • Option E is used when the information does not appear in the text.
  • You have to answer 9 questions in this part.
  • All the questions will in a single page.

Some Important tips to use to answer this part

  • Read each paragraph and infer the whole meaning of the passage.
  • Try to find what the main idea about this paragraph is.
  • Third give a title to the paragraph as per your understanding.
  • You will be given a piece of paper during the test for you to make notes to attempt your test.
  • Spend around 8-10 seconds for you to read and figure out what would be the main purpose of this paragraph.
  • Then write just the topic you could understand what it is about.
  • After that spend 10-15 seconds to know what each paragraph is mainly focussing upon.
  • Since you have 1 minute per statement for you to answer, so the time management is important.
  • Once you have found what each paragraph is mainly topic they are explaining then relate with these titles you have chosen to match with questions given to relate.
  • Use the connecting method of the key words and phrases taken from the paragraphs and match with the key words from the question statement.

Strategies that may help

Preview the passage and identify the topic of each of the paragraph on your own.

Identify key words in the statements and determine which paragraph will likely contain the answer.

Scan the paragraph for the key words and watch for paraphrased ideas and synonyms.

If you can match the complete statement to the paragraph, select the corresponding letters as your answer.

If you notice that one of the statement does not match with any of the paragraphs between A to D then simply select letter E.

Answer all the questions even if you need to guess. There is not negative marking for incorrect answers here.

Let’s look at a paragraph to understand how this can be done.

  1. Maple syrup is syrup usually made from the xylem sap of sugar maple, red maple, or black maple trees, although it can also be made from other maple species. In cold climate these trees store starch in their trunks and roots before winter; the starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap in late winter and early spring. Maple trees are trapped by drilling holes into their trunks and collecting the exuded sap, which is processed by heating to evaporate much of the water, leaving the concentrated syrup.

  1. Maple syrup was first collected and used by indigenous peoples of North America, and the practice was adopted by European settlers, who gradually refined production methods. Technological improvements in 1970s further refined syrup processing. The Canadian province of Quebec is by far the largest producer, responsible for 70 percent of world’s output; Canadian exports of Maple syrup in 2016 were CS 478 million (about US $360 million), with Quebec accounting for some 90 percent of this total. Vermont is the largest producer in the United States, generating about six percent of the global supply.

  1. Maple syrup is graded according to the Canada, United States, or Vermont scales based on its density and translucency. Sucrose is the most prevalent sugar in maple syrup in maple syrup. In Canada, syrups must be made exclusively from maple sap to qualify as maple syrup and must also be at least 66 percent sugar. In the United States, as syrup must be made almost entirely from maple sap to be labelled as maple, though states such as Vermont and New York have more restrictive definitions.
